Do I have to organise my own book tour?
Organising your own book tour is very much the same as organising your own book signings. Your publisher or literary agent may have clauses in their contracts which prevent you from organising your own book tour. Some will have strict guidelines that you need to stick to, others won’t allow you to get involved due to various reasons. Those reasons will vary from protecting their brand to wanting you to just show up all refreshed and focused.
Some publishers, like ourselves, will offer you all the support you need to organise a book tour that suits you, your family commitments, energetic capacity and personality.
If you self-publish, it is always a good idea to collaborate with other authors in the same, or a similar/complimentary genre, bringing in more awareness and readers, sharing the marketing efforts, any costs involved and the celebrations with once the tour has been completed.
If you contact bookstores directly, both indie and national chains, then they may be willing to help you arrange events. Working directly with the bookstores as part of a larger book and author series they may have planned for their retail outlets is always a good idea.
If your book is about sports, food, textiles or business, collaborating with stores where you co-host events at their stores would work in both your favours.
Teaming up with libraries, schools, universities and other venues such as coffee shops is also another option you might like to try. To figure out what you want and how you are going to do it, purchase the second module in my 7 Week Author Course to help you.
The choice really is down to you… especially when it comes down to the contract you agree to sign with a publisher or agent.
