Do I need an agent for my book?
An agent is not necessarily a good thing when it comes to helping you navigate the publishing industry, although they can help you negotiate contracts, and access opportunities that might not be available otherwise. If you want to get published by one of the Big 4 publishers then it is the best route – unless of course you have friends who work for one of the big boys!
Some agents, like anyone in any role, will be fantastic at what they do, working with you, guiding you and helping you to put things in place to make sure the publishers relevant to your genre know about you.
There are some agents who state you to have 10,000s of followers on social media, but if you have 10,000s of followers on social media, you’re doing pretty well and self-publishing or publishing with a boutique publisher like ourselves, could be the very best option for you – especially as you have a proven track record of being able to create a following for your books.
Agents are there to align you with the right publisher, but the publishers they work with may not be the right one for you. Before working with an agent, make sure that you know exactly what you want, do your own research on what is possible for you and your book, so you know what it is you are looking for in a publishing deal and what you are prepared to negotiate on.
