How do I get featured in magazines as an author?

Getting featured in magazines is both relatively easy, as well as incredibly competitive. It is easy because you can pay to be featured in as many magazines as your wishes and budget allows. It is competitive because there’s so many writers wanting exposure and the extra income.

To write for a magazine for ‘free’ you’ll need some stellar press releases getting you seen in the right publications. You can either write and distribute these yourself or pay a PR firm to do the work for you; hence ‘free’.

Getting paid to write means you’ll need to select the most appropriate magazine for your genre and subject. Once you have identified the most suitable and desirable magazines, then it is very much like applying for any paid job. You have to pitch yourself, your expertise and then negotiate rates – if they negotiate.

Many magazine editors already have a steady line up of contributors which they’ve known for years. These are either in their current magazines or within their network. Breaking into that inner circle can take many rejections, which is why so many authors choose to ‘pay to play’. Your article then essentially becomes an advert.

If you are regularly posting blogs onto your website or professional social media pages, then you may get invited to collaborate. Be aware you’ll also be opening yourself up to magazines wanting you to part with £1000s.

Some of the magazines you have to pay for include Entrepreneur, Publishers Weekly, Time, Brainz, and The Bookseller. The publishing world is changing rapidly. Make sure you are up-to-date with how to get featured, and how much you are willing to pay to be featured.
