How many books do I need to sell to become a bookseller?

The target every author seems to be after – the status of a bestselling author! And who can blame you? Becoming a bookseller gives us kudos and a sense of achievement, a sign that we’ve made it.

But…

Becoming a bestseller is a very easy thing to achieve if you know how. And not all bestsellers have sold 10,000s of copies or even 100 copies. Surprised? Yes, well you really shouldn’t be – especially with the growing number of unethical marketing tactics being implemented across a wide array of industries these days.

The thing to realise with becoming a bestselling author is that it involves establishing a business, obtaining inventory (your books), and setting up sales and marketing channels. There’s also the finance and administration of the distribution deals you will need to create and along with that comes the legal side of things.

The number of books you need to sell can vary depending on your business model and goals, and, of course, your strategy.

Things to consider include:

  • Are you going to be ethical in gaining bestseller status?
  • Will you want to keep this accolade?
  • What other accolades fit into your current strategy?
  • How many events are you willing and able to put on or attend?
  • How much travelling are you prepared to do?
  • Why do you really want the accolade?
  • Which is most important to you: Accolades gained or number of readers made happy?
